Warner Bros has bought the movie rights to All You Need Is Kill, a novel by Japanese science-fiction author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The novel was published in 2004 and received high praise not only in Japan but also abroad. The story is about a soldier who keeps reliving the same day over and over -- except it's the day he dies in a massive interstellar war.
This live action movie adaptation of All You Need Is Kill will be helmed by Director Doug Liman (who brought us Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Jumper). The lead actor hasn't been announced yet (will people protest if he doesn't look Asian?). the film is listed for a 2012 release on IMDb.
"The story in All You Need Is Kill follows a soldier pressed into battle on Earth against a superior alien species called 'Mimics', then gets killed in action, but is stuck in a time loop and relives his last day over and over. Eventually, he sees things change, he becomes a better warrior and discovers hints that might be the key to altering the outcome."
I'm hooked already by the premise, quite impatient to see the movie All You Need Is Kill. Let's hope it will get produced soon!
